DIY Drink Cozy

With summer temps rising, there’s no better place to experience #LifeInFullBloom than poolside. Try brightening up your next pool party with these fun and easy-to-make drink cozies!

Here’s what you’ll need:
  • Drink bottle
  • Paper
  • Fabric
  • Insul-Bright batting (or any other thicker insulated batting)
  • 2 pieces of elastic (cut into 4 inch long strips)
  • 2 buttons
  • Sewing supplies (colored pencil, scissors, pins, needle, thread, sewing machine)

Step 1: Make your pattern

Use a piece of paper and cut to the desired size of the cozy. You will want to make sure the paper wraps around the entire bottle with about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch overlap.

Cut the corners of one of the short sides of the paper at a 45° angle. Voila! You’ve got your pattern!

Step 2: Cut the fabric

Fold your fabric in half, making sure the pattern you want showing on the outside of your cozy is inside. Next, pin your piece of paper to the fabric and cut. When fully cut, you will have two identical pieces of fabric.

Step 3: Cut the insulation

Pin the same piece of paper you’ve been using to the batting and cut.

Step 4: Sew on the elastic loops

Grab one of the cut pieces of fabric and the 2 pieces of elastic. Fold the elastic in half and pin them on the end of the fabric with the cut corners. The pattern you want on the outside of the cozy should be facing up.

Make sure the loops are facing in, and the ends are facing out. Sew the pieces onto the fabric.

Step 5: Stack your fabric

Stack the pieces of fabric in the correct order in preparation for sewing. Going from bottom to top: the piece of the fabric with the elastic loops (pattern facing up), the other piece of the fabric (pattern facing down), insulated batting. Pin the layers together, so they don’t shift around when you start sewing.

Step 6: Sew the layers together

Place the stacked fabric together on the sewing machine like shown in the photo. Starting on the left side, sew around the perimeter. Sew in a U shape and stop and the shortest side. You will be turning the piece inside out, so make sure you don’t sew that last side together!

Step 7: Turn inside out

Now that you have three sides of the fabric sewn together open the shortest side and turn inside out.

Step 8: Sew the last side together

Hand stitch the open end together. Once completed, all of your sides will be fully enclosed!

Step 9: Mark the placement of your buttons

Wrap the fabric around your bottle as if you were putting the cozy on. Stretch both of the elastic pieces and mark the spot with a colored pencil. This will be a rough placement, so no need to be perfect.

Step 10: Sew on your buttons

Place your buttons in the center of the colored pencil marks you just made and sew on the fabric.

Step 11: Put on your bottle and enjoy!

Mix and match fabric patterns, buttons, and thread to create one-of-a-kind drink cozies. Make sure to share your creations with us by using #LifeInFullBloom and tagging @endlesssummerhydrangeas. We can’t see what you come up with!
