How to Plan for Spring

No matter the time, it’s never too early to start planning for what your hydrangeas need from you in spring. In fact, a little planning this winter will set you and your hydrangeas up for a fantastic season. Here are ideas, tips, and inspiration you can use while planning!

Think Back to This Year

The best place to start is assessing how this year went. Take time to note down what went well and what didn’t. This will help you determine areas that need improving. You can even take a trip outside and walk around your landscape. Bring a notebook or phone with you so you can keep track of areas you love and areas that need a pop of something special. This walkabout will reacquaint you with your landscape, get your mind centered on what your space needs, and what you want from your space as well.

Look For Opportunities

As you walk around, keep your mind open, looking for opportunities. Notice a space that seems a little bare? Realize that your foundation plantings need updating? Mark them down as opportunities to bring gorgeous color and interest into your space! In the end, you’ll have a list of areas of opportunity that you can curate and make your own.

Write Down Your Goals

Once you have your list started, winter is a great time to sit down by the fire with a hot cup of cocoa and outline your goals. What new hydrangeas do you want to try in your garden or containers this year? What landscaping projects do you hope to accomplish? Feel free to sketch out that garden design you’ve had in your head all year. A little organization now will make your spring that much more enjoyable. Plus, when spring rolls around, and you’re at a local garden center picking up the newest plants for your space, you’ll already have a list you can work from.

Check the Calendar

It also never hurts to plan early for what care your hydrangeas will need come spring. If you’re looking for a place to start, check out our Gardening Calendar for seasonal tips. It’s also handy to know when the last frost is in your area, so you know when it’s safe to start gardening in the spring. We’ve compiled the average frost dates for each state here.
